Grit Blasting

Hy Spec Services have been carrying out preparation works in the form of Grit Blasting for almost 25 years. Grit Blasting, otherwise known as Shot Blasting or Sand Blasting, uses abrasive material, like grit to remove existing paint, rust, mill scale and/or grease to take the steel work back to sound paint or clean steel. A new paint system can then be applied to the surface. This can be done up to and including Sa2 1/2 standard.

Hy Spec Services encapsulate structures or scaffold to contain the blast material, then collect and dispose of the spent abrasive. We also deal with lead based paint on existing structures; using the appropriate PPE, monitoring the lead levels in the blood of our operatives and disposing of the waste in the appropriate way.

Mechanical Preparation

Hy Spec Services have also been carrying out preparation works using mechanical tools for almost 25 years. Mechanical preparation involves removing existing paint, rust and/or grease, using hand and mechanical tools, to take the steelwork back to sound paint or clean steel. A new paint system can then be applied to the surface. This can be done to St2 and St3 standard.

Again, Hy Spec contain and collect the removed material and dispose of it using the correct method. This can be also be done for lead based paint on existing structures.

Industrial Painting / Protective Coatings

Hy Spec Services primary business is industrial painting. We have been applying protective coatings to structures throughout the UK since we were founded in 1993. Hy Spec applies various paint systems, for a wide range of environments, from steelwork to tanks as well as other materials for public or private clients throughout the UK. We use the latest paint technology, including paint systems newly apprioved by the Department of Transport and Network Rail. We also regularly trial different paint systems including glass epoxy paint and durable moisure cured paitn which lasts up to 30 years. We can also provide advise and undertake inspections as detailed below and above on any structure.

The protective coatings are suitable for steel work, timber and contrete which is guaranteed for durability. This can be applied as rust proofing, anti-graffiti coating or fire proof coating. Paint systems can be hand or spray applied.

Paint Inspection

Hy Spec Services has a Level 2 and two Level 1 Paint Inspectors. These qualifications were achieved through the Institute of Corrosion (ICORR) and allows the inspector to carry out inspections and testing of applied paint systems.

Non-Skid Surfacing

Hy Spec Services have applied non-skid surfaces to a wide range of bridge decks, tops of tanks, fuel bunds and other trafficked walkways. The systems are cold applied resin products with aggregate to create non-skid surfaces with a shallow build-up.

Civil Engineering / Structural Inspection and Assessment

Hy Spec Services employ a full-time Chartered Civil Engineer. We can offer Civils input on painting projects, to encompass a wider range of works into a works package.

This also allows Hy Spec to undertake inspections and/or assessments of structures. With over 5 years design and assessment experience, the Chartered Civil Engineer has the competency to inspect, assess and propose solutions to structural issues.
